Welcome Nice to meet you!  This is just my simple blog about being a wedding photographer in San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles, the people I meet, and the photographs I take...plus some stories to help you glue them all together.  Please feel free to leave a comment...I love hearing from everyone.  As my fortune cookie said "Great people will come into your life" so I take that to mean you all, too!

My best friend Lisa and her family are up from Los Angeles. She and I met years ago when I sublet a room in her two bedroom apartment for a year. It was instant friendship and fun. We have lots in common; love of travel, love of photography, and love of Brad Pitt. *le sigh* We watched Legends of the Fall so many times together, probably could recite a good portion of that movie between the two of us. I was even there the very minute she met her husband for the first time. Eventually, I used her homemade canoles to woo Jason when we were dating...passing them off as my own in an attempt to make him think I had culinary skills. (I did confess after awhile passed, although I'm sure it was painfully obvious he'd been duped pretty early on.) Anyways, it was our first attempt at an Ortiz family photo this weekend. We did get several that I liked, but this one is my favorite. While the kids weren't "easy" today, they sure had expressive faces...and I think that was just how I wanted it. And, then the individual shots of them were so much fun! This one just gets my heart though. The lashes! Can someone call Max Factor and tell him we found a mascara model? We went back to the house and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon with a pedicure, Lisa's homemade spaghetti sauce, and some backyard water fights. I LOVE the warm summer weather!!! Bring IT!

We were in Disneyland for the last couple days. In celebration, we bought a new little tiny video camera to record some of those "precious moments" that might have happened. Unfortunately, two of my favorite moments never made it to the video camera...

Moment #1: I was picking up our lunch at the restaurant's waiting window, when I noticed that the Disney cast member (they are not called "employees" there, LOL) serving me looked a little worse-for-the-wear. I asked her if she was ok, and she answered a little too honestly for my taste. She said "Oh, no...I have the worst menstrual cramps." Ummm...gees thanks for that one right before I go and eat my lunch? Moment #2: Jason and I have been on Pinocchio's ride LOTS of times with the girls. This is the first time we ever noticed that they say "Go ahead. Make a JACKASS of yourself." at one point in the ride. It sounded clear as day this particular time through. Almost as if the background music had turned off and the voice-over was turned up. Anna, Jason, and I all looked at each other in surprise. And then Anna said "He said ass!!! Ohhhhhh, he's in trouble!" Since neither of those made it to video, I'll have to share this one of Holly's ride on the Toon Town roller coaster. I love how her face goes from scared to thrilled to elated in the 30 second ride. (sorry about my high pitched girlie screams. I couldn't help myself.)

With the great success of Toon Town, we went on to Thunder Mountain. Anna and Jason were sitting behind us with their hands up and huge smiles. But poor Holly gripped my waist and hid her head in my lap during the entire ride. Until the very end, when she finally looked up...as you can hear and see on the video...and said she really liked it. That enjoyment only lasted for about 2 seconds or less, then she swore she hated the ride again. Women are so fickle!

Yup...all that fancy camera work was me holding the camera. It was pretty hard on some of those Thunder Mountain turns. LOL

Love the videos Katie! Felt like we were sitting with you. The poor look on Hollys face on Thunder Mountain. Was that her first time on that one?

These are too funny! Looks like you're Disney geeks, like my family! Except we've never been to DisneyLAND -- Just Disney World (about 4 times a year -- yeah, we're obsessed). Thundermountain is a totally different setup! Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed these!

PS
I may make a trip out to Cali some time -- maybe get some photo advice from you and take a trip to Disneyland!

She'll let me take a photo of her for a piece of chocolate. Steep price, but still cheaper than gas.

Angela Higgins:

that is a beautiful shot katie. oh, and don't even get me started on the price of fuel! :)

i was wondering if in a future post you might be able to give some insight into your editing processes. it would be fantastic to know if you use many actions or simply tweak the curves and saturation. if you have time :)

katie:

Sure thing Angela! Look for a post in the near future with some post-processing techniques that I use.

Holly and Anna have been playing with each other mercilessly the last few months. Constantly with each other, or really it is usually "on" each other. The laughter is LOUD, the screams are at some super human high pitch that only little girls can reach. However, Holly loves to have her photo taken...Anna hates it. So when I bring out the camera while they are playing, this is what usually happens...

Holly...big smiles and laughs

and, a new character appeared today. Mr. Strong is gone...and in his place is Ariel, the sexy (?!) mermaid. Lord help me...this was her natural pose when she asked me to take a photo as Ariel. we are screwed in about 12 years.

Anna...hidden and goofy

she told me that she can make a "beaver" face...and then promptly put her front two teeth out in front of her lips...a new trick thanks to super loose front teeth. and then the typical reaction to paparazzi

*warning...ESPN type talk below*

If you know anything about my husband Jason, then you know that he is a HUGE Boston Celtics fan. The last few years (decade?) have been really tough for him. Season after season of disappointment. When you hear him describe the Celtics v. Lakers rivalry from when he was in high school, you can hear the excitement in his voice. I guess he used to wear all Celtics gear (at his LA-based high school) like a big dork. On our wonderful trip to Hawaii last year, we had to leave the beach in the middle of one beautiful day so that he could go to a sports bar and watch how the Celtics lottery pick would go (and it went poorly...a bad bad day for him). When Kevin Garnett signed with the team in the off season this year, I think you could have heard his face crack with the size of his smile. He has been pretty hush this whole year, not wanting to jinx anything. In fact, he'd probably tell me to erase this post just out of superstition, LOL. So, maybe just maybe...this is the year that the rivalry will go all the way to the Finals. The Celtics are seeded #1 in the East, and the Lakers are seeded #1 in the West. I have a feeling that if this goes to the Finals, Jason will be out of his mind. If you don't already have a favorite in the playoffs, please say some "Win Boston Win" mantras for my Jason. Things will be so much better all the way around if Boston wins. He could breathe again.

Lynne Anderson:

Tracy is sooo excited too. He always goes into a depression when March Madness ends, but this year he's got the Celtics!
