Welcome Nice to meet you!  This is just my simple blog about being a wedding photographer in San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles, the people I meet, and the photographs I take...plus some stories to help you glue them all together.  Please feel free to leave a comment...I love hearing from everyone.  As my fortune cookie said "Great people will come into your life" so I take that to mean you all, too!

It was just a matter of time before someone broke a bone, I suppose. Anna was playing kickball at school last week and twisted her ankle. We had to pick her up from the school nurse's office because she couldn't (wouldn't?) walk on it. We iced it, raised it up and let her rest. We figured it was just a sprained ankle.

(here comes the bad parenting part) Later in the evening, she still wasn't putting much weight on her foot at all. I was thinking that she was just playing up the injury for sympathy. Tried to tell her to "walk it off", but she wasn't having anything to do with that. So, I told her that if she still couldn't walk on it in the morning then we would take her to the doctor and he'd give her a shot. I thought that she would immediately start walking on it with the threat of a shot looming overhead. She didn't. In fact, the next morning she hopped to our bedroom door and said she still couldn't walk on it...then immediately burst into tears exclaiming "I DON'T WANT A SHOT!"

I felt lower than low. Obviously she really was hurt, and it was more than just a sprain. Took her to get xrays and turns out she fractured her ankle in two spots. Just from a simple turn of the ankle. In fact, the doctor told us young kids don't ever really sprain things...they just break them. The way the ligaments are developing, there is just no room for sprain. It's just a break usually. They let her pick the cast color. She chose (Laker) purple over (Celtics) green much to Jason's agony.

The most amusing part of this story? In 6th grade, I fractured my foot and my mom made me walk on it. She didn't believe that I was *really* hurt. And I've always wondered how she didn't understand me when I said it really did hurt. Why didn't she take me to the doctor right away? And now...I've officially turned into my mom.  Anna has a walking boot for the cast and she goes back in 3 weeks to see if she can get it off. She was pretty excited by the whole thing at first, especially the xrays. But, I think the novelty has worn off and now she just wants to run and play again.

It is okay, Katie...I have only had a child three weeks and I already see myself turning into my father.

Hopefully she feels better soon and she will be out running about in no time.

True story: I broke my pinkie finger in 5th grade and my mom didn't believe me, either. She made me practice my piano lessons on it even. A week later (A WEEK!) she saw that it was still swollen and bruised and took me to the doctor. THANKS, MOM!

Things have been quiet here. What was I doing? I took some time to enjoy family. Given the recent experiences, I had a very strong urge to spend more time with family and friends. Which involved 3 weekends in a row in San Diego. This is unheard of for me, especially since San Diego is a 5(ish) hour drive for me one-way. I took one kid each weekend, so we had some cool mom-daughter bonding time too. It was well worth all the driving.

Too bad I didn't have my new toy with me on all these trips! Check out my new FLIP HD video camera. That's right, this little tiny object is actually a HD video camera. It takes up to one hour of video, has no wires, no cards, and even has the USB connection built-in on the top (it flips up). And, did I mention it is tiny?! That is a regular sized pen for perspective. It easily slides into my pocket. I think every hospital should give this out as parents leave with their newborns. TOO cool. By the way, the name of the camera above is actually a link if you are interested in buying one of your own. I'll be posting up some new video of Holly doing the hula-hoop soon. It is really funny stuff.

The week before Trisha and Julie's wedding, we had 80 degree weather and sunny in January. It was crazy beautiful. Of course, the night before the wedding I was sitting in my house listening to the rain pour down and wondering what we were going to do. Trisha and Julie had to have their rehearsal inside. It was daunting. The day didn't exactly "clear up", large looming clouds were hanging in the sky. BUT, there was a silver lining in the clouds...literally. The color of the silvery, dark clouds combined with the soft light right before twilight made for some of the most amazing portraits I have ever taken. Trisha and Julie looked so incredible, I was literally having chills and shakes while taking these shots. By the way, the setting was the lovely Cypress Ridge Golf Course Pavillion. The colors, the decor, and the smiles were awesome.

As you've all recently read, I photographed Shannon and Greg's wedding in San Diego on January 11, 2009. Shannon and Greg's wedding was moved up in the schedule due to Greg's battle with Stage IV cancer. He was diagnosed about two months before their planned wedding date, and was aggressively fighting. They moved their wedding date up a few weeks to accommodate his battle and upcoming radiation treatments.

The day I returned home from their wedding, I contacted my wedding album vendor. KISS WEDDING BOOKS has been my exclusive album vendor for sometime now. They have a great product and excellent customer service...pretty simple to understand why I use them.; I wrote Kevin, the director at KISS, to ask for some help. I wanted to get Shannon and Greg an album as a gift. It wasn't something I'd discussed with Shannon previously. I just figured that an album was the last thing on Shannon and Greg's minds at this point, but thought that it would be a valued gift. I explained the situation to KISS. Greg's health was not good, and that time was a concern for me.; I really wanted to get this album to them as soon as possible. Not only did Kevin offer help...he and his staff became angels. Kevin said "Katie, you tell us when you want it and we can make it. If you want it in 2 days...we'll do it. You just let us know." And then he did something amazing...KISS offered to make this incredible album (in record time) as their GIFT to Shannon and Greg. I got the design done the next day, and sent it to KISS for production.

Unfortunately, Greg passed away on January 17th, just 6 short days after his wedding. Shannon called me a few days later with the news. Shannon's friend said 'Greg was hanging on for this wedding. He was hanging in there to marry Shannon.' And, I am absolutely convinced of the same. Greg's services are this weekend. I will be going down to San Diego this weekend and delivering the album. If a photo speaks a thousand words, I hope that the album and photos can say the countless (comforting) words I will want to say to Shannon, but undoubtedly will fail to speak in the moment.

I am touched by this experience beyond what I can describe here. I want to thank Shannon and Greg, their friends, and family for their personal warmth and embraces. And, I also want to thank KISS wedding books for gifting such an awesome thing as this wedding album. Without a doubt, that gift will be treasured. When I read the insert that comes in the album's shipping box I was struck by the words "We hope you appreciate this work of love, as every book is hand-made by our passionate staff". I can assure you without a doubt that this is a work of love and will be most appreciated. Thank you Kevin, Shaun, Mark, and Rachel!

Katie, I just found your blog through the KISS site and read your story. First of all , I really think that you were truly a blessing to this family, shooting their wedding free of charge and helping them so much must have been such a huge weight lifted off of them and just one less thing to worry about. And to top it off, Shannon will be able to look back at such perfect images of their special day (in a stunning album!). This story really touches my heart as my father passed away from Cancer, and its really just such a heart breaking thing to have such a close person pass away and be taken from you so quickly. But having people like you (and the peeps over at KISS), are truly angels here on earth, you are the type of people that make things like cancer a little easier to deal with. Katie, thanks for having such a huge heart and going out of your way to help. You are awesome! and these wedding images are great!! :)
